The Artist in Residence Programme places on average six artists in residence in Primary Schools in Kilkenny city and county each year. Artists take up residency in the schools, introducing teachers and their students to creative ideas and methods of exploration, communication and experimentation in the contemporary arts. Consisting of 20 hours contact time between artists and students, residencies employ ideas and methods that can be applied to the relevant art strands in the primary school curriculum.
This year, the following artists and schools were selected to work on the Artist in Residence in Primary School Programme –
- Tunde Toth (Burnchurch National School, Burnchurch)
- Polly Minnett (Kilkenny School Project, Kilkenny)
- Mairead Holohan (St. Beacon’s Primary School, Mullinavat)
- Fiona Power (St. Joseph’s GNS, Kilmacow)
- Siobhan Jordan (Scoil Naomh Bhride, Ballyragget)
- Deirdre McCarthy (Presentation Primary, Kilkenny)
Residencies took place between April and June 2009.
The Butler Gallery co-funds residencies with participating schools, accepting applications from schools and proposals from artists on an annual basis. Please Jean Tormey, Education Curator at jean@butlergallery.com or by calling 056 7761106 for more information. |

A board game for primary schools fusing Art, Maths and Science
Launched in May 2008 in Kilkenny Castle’s Parade Tower, Art-i-fact is a new initiative for primary schools developed over the past two years by the Butler Gallery, artist Andrew Snyder, and students and teachers at Scoil Naomh Fiachra and Lisnafunchin National School. Art-i-factis a board game that integrates subjects in the primary school curriculum - maths, science and art, and aims to introduce school children to aspects of these subjects in the curriculum in a fun and interactive way.
Art-i-fact is based on the concept of gaming or trading cards such as ‘Yugio’ or premiership soccer cards, however art cards use images from the Butler Gallery collection and a strategy designed by students aged 7 – 11 and teachers of Scoil Naomh Fiachra and Lisnafunchin National School. Students worked with the artist and their class teacher over a 14 week period to design a set of art cards and to develop a gaming strategy which can now be used in the classroom.
Art-i-fact art cards are now ready to be used by primary schools. For more information and to receive a set of cards, please contact Jean Tormey, Education Curator, Butler Gallery on 056 7761106 or email jean@butlergallery.com
‘Art-i-Fact’ was funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Kilkenny County Council Arts Office, Empowering Minds, the Kilkenny Education Centre and supported by the Office of Public Works. |
